Appointment Makes Business Expansion a Reality for Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers

Dr Michael Newcombe, company director and structural engineer, has been appointed to head the expansion of Christchurch and Tauranga-based consulting engineering firm Kirk Roberts into the Auckland marketplace.

Kirk Roberts has experienced significant growth on the back of their reputation for innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions. In recent months the company has won engineering contracts for work associated with some of the country’s largest exporters and commercial operations such as Vodafone, Skellerup, Synlait and Fonterra.

According to director, Jade Kirk, opening an office in Auckland has always been part of the business plan. However the company’s growth, coupled with the level of interest in its down-to-earth management style and capability, has brought that forward by “a few years”.

Mr Kirk noted that, “While many property developers and construction companies moved south to take advantage of the Canterbury rebuild, we have recognised the opportunity to move north spurred on by a real endorsement of what we offer. In fact, it is Auckland-based companies who have been urging us to take this move as soon as practicable.

Dr Newcombe’s appointment further reinforces the Kirk Roberts company culture that is commited to innovation. Mr Kirk highlighted that Dr Newcombe’s PhD from the University of Canterbury School of Engineering forged the way for advanced structural systems that utilised post-tensioned timber structures as opposed to the more traditional pre-cast concrete.

Prior to his doctoral studies Dr Newcombe had completed his Masters degree at the European School of Earthquake Engineering in Italy. His published research has paved the way for a new chapter in timber technology that is currently only applied by a small number of expert structural engineers and architects. This differentiates Kirk Roberts from many of their competitors and positions them alongside clients who want up-to-date thinking and knowledge.

Mr Kirk added that it was ironic how, by leveraging some of Dr Newcombe’s early research prior to joining Kirk Roberts, the company is now a finalist in the Building and Construction category of the NZ Engineering Excellence Awards 2014 to be announced in Auckland on 28 November.

The Kirk Roberts Auckland-based offices will be in Newmarket, and new projects that will be fronted by Dr Newcombe are already on the table.

About Kirk Roberts:

  • The company provides structural, geotechnical, civil and fire engineering.
  • It has over 50 staff in its offices in Tauranga and Christchurch.
  • Jade Kirk, Steven Roberts and Damian McMillan are the company directors.
